Hine's Emerald (Somatochlora hineana) is the only federally-endangered dragonfly in the United States. It has very specific habitat requirements in certain types of fens or calcareous wetlands. Last summer, Michigan State University's Anthony Cognato encountered two female Hine's Emerald dragonflies along Lake Michigan in Oceana County, far from any characteristic fen habitats or other populations. If that wasn't surprising enough, genetic analyses revealed the two dragonflies were different from each other and from other populations in Michigan. Our paper was just published in the Bulletin of American Odonatology, the journal of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas.
