As a followup to the Nicaraguan ode shots in the previous post, I thought I'd include some habitat shots in the area of the Matagalpa department.
FINCA ESPERANZA VERDE (FEV) -- shade coffee farm near San Ramon, Matagalpa dept.
-- Main buildings: 12.93978, -85.78003, 1100 m
We were at FEV March 4-11, 2009.
Our cabin on the hill, near the main buildings. The Red Rock Skimmer (
Paltothemis lineatipes) seemed to prefer hunting and clinging to the exterior walls of the cabin. The Turquoise-tipped Darner (
Rhionaeschna psilus) was patrolling the hillside.

-- Yellow trail creek: 12.93398, -85.78248, 1100 m. A small creek crossing along the Yellow Trail.

-- Blue trail creek: 12.9382, -85.7814. This little creek was next to our bird banding setup in the shade coffee plantation.

-- Red trail creek: no GPS reading since I saw no odes ;^( However, a group visiting in a previous year found a helicopter damselfly along this creek.

"GENERAL NESTOR'S" (GN) -- private property near El Naranjo, Matagalpa dept.; 12.89714, -85.78798, 688 m. The valley near homestead contained a great little creek with pools, small waterfalls, and flowing water. We were at GN on March 9, 2009.
This pool had the Wide-tailed Sylph (
Macrothemis pseudimitans) ....

... and an amberwing (
Perithemis mooma).
This little trickle contained the Fiery-eyed Dancers (
Argia oenea).

Finally, the female Carmine Skimmer
Orthemis discolor was found about 100m down the road from the homestead.
SELVA NEGRA -- shade coffee and forest reserve between Matagalpa and Jinotega, Matagalpa dept.; 13.00024, -85.90874, 1290 m. A small lake was created near the restaurant and lodge. We were at Selva Negra on March 11, 2009.

A few small streams flow from the mountains down toward the lake.

In the next post, I'll show habitat at Domitila in the dry, tropical forest of Nicaragua.
