We did not have collecting permits in Nicaragua, so we just netted and released. There are some good references for the tropics, but we couldn't lug them all along on our trip...hence many photos of various features in the hand for later ID (there are many dozens not posted here!).

There aren't a huge number of species of helicopter damsels, so an ID is possible from a photo, send me a link and I'll take a look.

And John, the largest member of the order Odonata is one of these helicopter damsels -- I wrote about them here:
http://urbanodes.blogspot.com/2005/08/helicopter-damselfies.htmlJAChttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03852586012508613542noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9707956.post-61190735738851660082009-03-26T09:47:00.000-04:002009-03-26T09:47:00.000-04:00The Lemon-tipped Helicopter Damsel looks massive f...The Lemon-tipped Helicopter Damsel looks massive for a damselfly!John B.https://www.blogger.com/profile/00163297234733313179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9707956.post-57274989437533967322009-03-25T22:17:00.000-04:002009-03-25T22:17:00.000-04:00Wow, back with a vengeance.Do you keep a collectio...Wow, back with a vengeance.

Do you keep a collection or "catch & release"? How easy/hard is it to ID them in the field - especially tropical countries?

I have a helicopter damsel from Amazonian Ecuador - would it be possible to ID from a photo of the specimen? It was quite an amazing thing to watch in flight.

regards--tedAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
