late White-faced Meadowhawk

While doing a survey at UM-Dearborn on October 11, 2009, I was fortunate to find a male White-faced Meadowhawk (Sympetrum obtrusum). This represents a new late date for Michigan according to the MOS database.

Most ecologists like to work in pristine areas. Urban areas are largely ignored. Since 2001, we have recorded 46 new species for Wayne County, MI, bringing the total to 95 species (there's a link to the checklist below).

Nannothemis is an ecologist, whose research focus is on the importance and function of urban ecosystems.

Stylurus is the husband of Nannothemis. He is an engineer, talented birder, keen naturalist, and pretty good with an insect net when his "old soccer injuries" aren't bothering him.
