Feeling Blue

On July 28, 2009, I visited the Novi Wetlands (off of West Rd, east of West Park Dr) over my lunch hour. I was surprised to find this fully blue Lance-tipped Darner (Aeshna constricta).

Most ecologists like to work in pristine areas. Urban areas are largely ignored. Since 2001, we have recorded 46 new species for Wayne County, MI, bringing the total to 95 species (there's a link to the checklist below).

Nannothemis is an ecologist, whose research focus is on the importance and function of urban ecosystems.

Stylurus is the husband of Nannothemis. He is an engineer, talented birder, keen naturalist, and pretty good with an insect net when his "old soccer injuries" aren't bothering him.
